Dental advice and treatment

We now know the importance of dental health in our pets and the effect of dental health on their general health.

Your pets teeth will be checked at every consultation or health check visit and can also be checked by our nurses anytime in our free dental checks.

We can then advise as to the best course of action. If dental disease is mild we can give advice regarding diets and brushing, which can help slow down the build up of calculus. If dental disease is more advanced we may recommend a dental procedure be performed where the teeth are cleaned or if badly diseased, removed.

Pet Dentistry

Dentistry procedures require a full general anaesthetic and every patient is placed on intravenous fluids during this procedure. After being anaesthetised the teeth are examined visually and probed to detect pockets and defects.

Radiographs may also be taken to identify problems beneath the gums. The teeth are then cleaned or removed if necessary. We use modern ultrasound scalers and high speed burrs for these procedures.

Dog Vet South Adelaide

Your pet will go home with pain relief, antibiotics if needed, a dental chart, before and after photos, and extensive home care notes.

A dental revisit occurs with a Veterinary Nurse or a Veterinarian 5-10 days after the procedure. At this follow up check we check healing in the mouth (if teeth were removed) and will provide comprehensive advice on dental disease prevention. This is usually free of charge unless other procedures occur at the time.

We strongly recommend early intervention with dental issues so that we can maximise the chances of preventing serious dental disease developing.
